Responsibilities of The Township Planning Department
The DeWitt Charter Township Planning Department is responsible for administering and enforcing the Comprehensive Development Plan, the Zoning Ordinance, and the Subdivision Control Ordinance. The Department staff provides recommendations to the Board of Trustees and Planning Commission to assist each in making decisions regarding land uses and development proposals. The Planning Department also provides staff assistance and recommendations to the Board of Appeals. The Department reviews development plans for compliance with Township Ordinances and assists citizens and developers to better understand land use policies and regulations.

The Comprehensive Development Plan is a long range plan that includes goals, objectives, and policies for the growth and development of the Township. These goals, objectives, and policies are stated in the text and illustrated in maps that are included in the Plan. The Future Land Use Map shows the preferred future location of various kinds of uses (residential, commercial, agricultural, etc.). The rest of the Plan illustrates the appropriate timing for future development.

The Zoning Ordinance contains the regulations regarding the use of land. The regulations are based on the goals, objectives and policies in the Comprehensive Development Plan. Zoning divides the community into zoning districts and establishes regulations governing the use, placement, spacing, and size of land and buildings. Consult the Zoning Ordinance for detailed information on the regulations and the zoning districts as illustrated on the accompanying Zoning Map.
